Have you ever come across a web hosting review and been startled at what you read? Reviews are always welcomed and most people do consult some product or service reviews before making a purchase. However, when you read such colorful and short-sighted reviews as “This company sux!” it may make you wonder. Just how important are online company reviews?

First, let’s analyze the idea realistically. When a person purchases a product online he or she earns the right to leave public feedback to the company. Not every person has the same skill when it comes to writing, spelling or communication. Some reviews will be short and to the point, others will be very wordy and of long length. Some reviews might be incomprehensible or very obviously biased. However, you should never conclude that any review is totally worthless or not worth taking seriously. Every review you read is a legitimate point-of-view. Because web hosting companies offer their services to a wide variety of consumers, there is sure to be some very different opinions shared. The best thing to do is to form a composite mind of a company based on the consensus from all of its reviews. You can’t go by any one review; however, a collection of reviews that say similar things can certainly be taken to heart.

For example, if you notice that dozens of people are leaving negative feedback for a web hosting company claiming that its technical support is awful, then that is a strong indication that this company would not be a sound investment. What if one person writes a conflicting report saying that the company is excellent in all respects? You have to determine if the majority opinion is more convincing than just one voice.

Remember to read as many reviews as possible before making a decision. This will be all the more important if you only find one or two reviews for a site, and if they’re irrelevant or highly-biased. What about “trolls”, those fake reviewers that simply post venomous posts because of a personal vendetta? Don’t conclude that all negative, even extreme comments are of no consequence. For someone to be so upset that he or she wastes a lot of time online writing scathing reviews may indicate the person had a very bad experience with the company. Try and discern what that experience was. Was it poor customer service or a bad company policy?

There is a lot to learn from online reviews so read them carefully and also try to read between the lines!
